I thought in a sense they are all aristocrats, with the very long names, often with the place where you're born. It also struck me that in the Culture, citizens have the lifestyle and access to luxury that in our history only aristocrats have had access to. We'd live in a giant hive, and dress identically in dungarees. There seemed to be all this convention that in the future everyone would have numbers for names. uk: One thing newcomers to the Culture novels will have to grapple with is the incredibly elaborate names of the characters.īanks: A lot of what the Culture is about is a reaction to all the science fiction I was reading in my very early teens. Banks: This one takes place about 800 years later on in the chronology of the Culture, that's why you've now got the whole potential of the turf wars, because Contact has hived off itself into different bits and there are various bureaucratic evolutions going on within the Contact section itself. 6/20/2023 0 Comments In bloom by matthew crowHow would you pitch your latest book in up to 25 words?Ī romantic comedy between a pretentious fifteen-year-old boy and a tough-talking girl set on a cancer ward in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This was a enemies to friends to lovers to enemies to friends with benefits to enemies to friends to lovers romance. But when college does happen, things don’t go to plan for both our lovers. As their love grows and they start heading for college, they decide to make their own choices and get married. Throw in some teenage hormones, jealousy, birthdays and a whole lot of teasing and bam! They begin to fall for each other in what I think is the sweetest part of the whole story. Rebelling against both their mothers wishes, they put a cork over their attraction to one another. I enjoyed this more than Toby and Pippa’s and I think that narrows down to the plot being just the well balanced amount of angst and sexual tension.Ĭallum and Renee almost instantly detest each other when they first meet as teenagers. Fucked up in their own unique way and so perfect for each other. Something borrowed: “He’d broken my heart too many times to count, but I wouldn’t let him break me.”īefore getting into the story, I would like to say this whole plot worked incredibly well because both main characters were cunning.
